This customer had two needs, as there are two different steering wheel airbags and one front-seat passenger airbag for the new car which are delivered by suppliers in Germany and Poland to their facilities. The task was to develop a UN certified reusable packaging solution which is suitable for all three airbag types and which provides the highest exploitation of transport capacity when loading the truck. The inner packaging was to be customized for each type of airbag, but the outer measurements were to remain the same in order to use a standardised packaging for all products.
In order to find the best solution for the customer a project team was formed between representatives from the two companies. The team decided on a steel container measuring 1200 x 800 x 975 mm with three antistatic EPP trays for the inner packaging. These were tested by the Austrian Packaging Institute and awarded UN approval for the dangerous goods groups II and III.

The measurements of the steel box enable a three tier stacking during transportation.

Thanks to the customized EPP trays for each type of airbag they can all be transported safely without any damages.

Another advantage is that all trays have the same outer measurements and so the same size steel box can always be used again.

Due to the weight of the EPP trays, the handling of the products at the production line is very easy.
