Packaging for Electronic Ticketing System

The Customer Case:

The customer designs, manufactures and integrates automated fare collection systems for public transit projects throughout the world. Every year, nearly 10 billion journeys are made worldwide using their fare collection systems. The company's products include non-contact smart cards, magnetic strip cards and transit hardware including gates and ticket machines. The packaging system used at the customer prior to Nefab’s involvement consisted of ¾” plywood, surrounded by a frame of nailed 2x4’s, which took too long to assemble and was not cost effective due to high freight costs.

The Nefab Solution:

Nefab’s engineering design team thoroughly reviewed the shipping system being used. Nefab, with its strong background in electronic equipment packaging, quickly responded with solutions that would provide damage free shipments for the customer. The Nefab solution offered was an ExPak "S" plywood box, with inner packaging to protect the product. A pallet was enhanced with foam cushioning for shock absorption during shipment. VCI bags were used to replace plain poly bags as well as desiccants to better protect against the possibility of condensation during transport. Honeycomb was then added as side-wall support to prevent any sideshifting and/or scratching of machinery.

Customer Benefits:

  • Eliminated shipping damage
  • Reduced packing time by more than 75%
  • Lower shipping costs by virtue of the lighter weight
  • Removed the need for nails or nail guns, improving ergonomics & safety
  • Only requires one operator to pack the product
