Reducing your carbon footprint starts with us.
Nefab has a unique position when it comes to how we choose to approach and manage sustainability. By and large, this comes down to two primary reasons. The first is our global footprint; today, Nefab is active in over 30 countries, which gives what we do, both on an operational and a strategic level, importance in the many industries and communities we serve around the world.
The second is rooted in the nature of our core business offering, which enables us to influence those we interact with in all levels of our supply chain. Both of these aspects bring with them a responsibility that is not held lightly; to us, sustainability is not just a set of numbers to meet or promises to make to our stakeholders – it is a way of working and simply a way of being in our day to day lives.
We have the tools in place to conduct full Life Cycle Analyses of the environmental impact of our packaging solutions, from the raw materials phase all the way to its end of life. We are able to calculate a number of parameters, such as global warming potential (GWP) or water consumption, by which we can measure impact at each stage in the cycle. Our experts can utilize this data to help you understand the impact of your existing packaging solutions and compare them to new solutions that can be designed with the aim to reduce your overall carbon footprint.
In the era of modern day Nefab, a large focus has been placed on finding smart new ways to provide greener packaging solutions, particularly in terms of material composition and design. Over the years, we have grown our global team of packaging engineers – not only in numbers, but in expertise as well; the continued advancement of technology opens the door to new opportunities in green solutions in many areas, and we have been learning and adapting along with it. With the help of strong partnerships with material based research companies and universities around the world, we work to challenge the notion of what packaging can be and what it can mean, for us and for the world which surrounds us.
Despite the evolution of possibilities in material innovation over the years, Nefab's design philosophy has remained somewhat unchanged ever since the inception of our total cost approach. For each solution our engineers design, the ultimate goal is to hit the "packaging sweet spot," that is, to provide packaging that manages to reduce the amount of material to the lowest level possible while still optimizing its durability and product protection.
An easy way to reduce waste is by using a solution that can be reused several times over. Nefab has decades of experience designing, implementing and pooling returnable systems that can be used in as many as 50 cycles! Due to this, the reductions to cost and waste can be enormous when using a returnable solution. Thanks to Nefab's RECO software, which compares the cost of one-way and returnable solutions, and our Life Cycle Analysis tools, we can provide a full picture of the cost and environmental impact of making the switch to returnable.
Nefab strives for all production units to implement and maintain an environmental management system (ISO 14001:2015 or similar) in order to hold a high level of identification, management and control of environmental concerns, as well as to monitor and improve resource efficiency and waste reduction in our facilities around the world.
The United Nations Global Compact is a strategic policy initiative for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labor standards, environment and anti-corruption. Nefab signed the UN Global Compact in October 2008 and has supported the initiative ever since. We take improvement actions that align with the principles laid out in various areas of our business and evaluate our progress on an annual basis. Nefab conducts thorough supplier evaluations which cover many different facets of our business with them. One of these is based on environmental impact, and as the rating in this area significantly affects the overall score of a supplier, we can use it to control the minimum level of compliance and motivate suppliers to provide more environmentally friendly components and solutions. Additionally, to work with Nefab, suppliers must accept to comply with our Code of Conduct, which details a commitment to human rights, fair labor standards and health and safety, among other vital aspects of our business.
Through dilligent sourcing and high supply standards, Nefab is able to commit to sourcing from vendors who source their own materials in a responsible, sustainable way. In regards to wood based materials, our largest area, we work with suppliers certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) where possible, in order to ensure that the materials which come together to make up Nefab products come from a place of responsibility and care.
In addition, Nefab adheres to a strict list of banned and restricted substances in the supply of each manufacturing facility across our regions. This guarantees that toxic substances, conflict minerals, various nanomaterials, and other such substances that may cause harm to its surrounding people and environment are not present in Nefab's products.
