Products that are categorized as dangerous goods need to be protected as per the dangerous goods classification.

Packaging Classes 1-9

Dangerous Goods Packaging Groups

Packaging group I (X)

- Should pass a drop test from 1.8 m (the strongest packaging) for very dangerous goods. (Poisonous substances such as cyanide, and infectious substances demand this packaging group.)

Packaging group II (Y)

- Should pass a drop test from 1.2 m* for medium dangerous goods. (Explosives, batteries intended for air freight demand this packaging group)

*If a box is intended for explosives it also must have a special judgement for explosives.

Packaging group III (Z)

- Should pass a drop test from 0.8 m for less (but still) dangerous goods. (Ex. flammable fluids and batteries intended for road transport demand this group.)

A box that is tested for packaging group I is of course permitted to be used as a group II or III packaging provided the maximum gross weight is not exceeded.
