Nefab and Signify Win China GPA Innovation & Sustainability Award

Nefab has partnered with Signify (formerly Philips Lighting) to develop a fully fiber-based, plastic-free packaging solution for Signify’s outdoor lighting products.

The new design replaces EPS foam with Nefab’s proprietary corrugated structural cushioning, achieving complete plastic elimination while ensuring strong protection and performance. Thanks to its outstanding environmental impact and structural innovation, the project received the China GPA 2025 (Green Packaging Action) Award for Packaging Technology Innovation.

Corrugated Packaging for Outdoor Lighting

This project was specifically designed for Signify’s outdoor lighting range. It utilizes a corrugated structural design, combining engineered folding and cushioning principles to maintain high protective performance while significantly reducing packaging volume and material usage. The solution has undergone extensive drop, vibration and transportation tests, demonstrating reliable protection throughout long-distance shipping and complex supply chain operations.

Recognized for its excellence in plastic elimination, material innovation and resource efficiency, this fiber-based packaging solution earned the China GPA 2025 Packaging Technology Innovation Award. The award celebrates projects that advance the green transformation of the packaging industry and support corporate sustainability goals through design innovation.

Key Benefits

  • Fully Plastic-Free: The corrugated structural design replaces traditional EPS, enabling 100% recyclability.
  • Compact and Efficient: The innovative foldable structure reduces packaging volume, increases loading efficiency and lowers logistics costs.
  • Cost Optimization: Eliminates EPS disposal and recycling costs, reducing landfill waste by 1,395 kg per year and lowering waste handling expenses, making the overall packaging solution more economical and sustainable.
  • CO2 Saving: By adopting an all-paper design compatible with existing recycling systems, the solution helps reduce approximately 18 tons of CO₂ emissions per year.

Co-Creating a More Efficient and Sustainable Supply Chain

Jointly developed by Nefab and Signify, this project marks another milestone in the companies’ decade-long partnership. Combining Signify’s product requirements with Nefab’s sustainability expertise, the teams created an innovative solution that balances performance, cost-efficiency and environmental responsibility.

“In our pursuit of balancing packaging performance and environmental responsibility, Nefab’s fiber-based solution has opened new possibilities. Through advanced structural design and testing, we’ve successfully achieved both plastic elimination and robust protection, laying the foundation for sustainable packaging across more product lines in the future.”
— Xu Xin, Global Packaging Expert at Signify

Nefab and Signify have worked together for over ten years, jointly driving more than 200 packaging optimization and plastic elimination projects worldwide. By integrating Nefab’s fiber-based material technologies with Signify’s product design standards, the two companies continue to explore more sustainable packaging solutions.

This award not only recognizes the technical innovation behind the project but also highlights a long-term strategic collaboration built on shared sustainability goals. Looking ahead, Nefab will continue to support Signify’s sustainability vision, working together to advance the global lighting industry’s green transition and build a more circular, low-carbon supply chain ecosystem.

How to Protect Semiconductor Manufacturing Equipment in Transit?

Semiconductor manufacturing leaves no room for error. Every process, every component, every piece of equipment operates within microscopic tolerances, and that precision can’t be compromised once the machines leave the cleanroom. Yet, shipping high-value parts such as electrostatic chucks, pedestals, or showerheads introduces a whole new layer of risk.
