The Challenge: Over-Packaging and Inefficient Logistics
Our customer is an industry leader who designs and produces high-quality machinery for various mining activities across the globe. They continuously seek innovative ways to lower carbon emissions and reduce plastic use as their business evolves.
Prior to our collaboration, the customer relied on a mixed-material packaging solution made of steel and wood to transport heavy equipment, such as mining rotors. While this heavy-duty approach provided sufficient strength, it caused severe over-packaging. The excess weight and material bulk drove up costs and created bottlenecks in material handling and disposal for end-users.
Furthermore, the local suppliers they worked with provided inconsistent on-site packing services. This lack of standardization led to ongoing logistical inefficiencies. The packing process suffered from delays and high labor costs. Without a streamlined approach, overall packaging productivity remained low, and space utilization inside shipping containers and trucks was highly suboptimal. The customer recognized the urgent need for a cost-effective partner who could optimize material usage, standardize operations, and support their strict sustainability goals.
Nefab's Solution: Custom Plywood Design and Comprehensive On-Site Services
To resolve these issues, we proposed a custom-designed plywood box to replace the heavy steel-and-wood crates. This new design maintained the required structural performance required for transporting heavy machinery via forklifts and cranes, but it drastically reduced overall material usage.
Beyond the physical packaging, the solution included a full suite of on-site services to overhaul the customer's operational workflow.
This service package featured:
- Standardized on-site packing to ensure consistent quality and speed.
- Optimized truck loading and container securing to maximize space utilization and improve transport safety.
- Tracking system services for improved labeling accuracy and inventory visibility.
- Finished goods warehouse management to streamline overall logistics.
Results: Measured Improvements in Efficiency and Sustainability
The comprehensive approach significantly improved the customer's logistics operations. The lighter, optimized plywood boxes drastically simplified the unpacking process for end-users, making it significantly safer and faster without requiring heavy tools for dismantling.
By implementing this optimized strategy, the customer achieved exceptional measurable results
- 74% reduction in CO2 emissions due to lighter materials and better space utilization.
- 38% reduction in overall packaging costs by eliminating unnecessary steel and excessive wood.
- 56% increase in handling efficiency driven by standardized on-site packing services.
This project highlights that true supply chain optimization requires looking beyond the box itself. By replacing heavy, mixed-material crates with an engineered plywood solution and standardizing on-site packing, the customer transformed a complicated logistical burden into a highly efficient, sustainable operation.
We save resources in supply chains for a better tomorrow.
